This book discusses about the introduction and knowledge about natural medicines. In the field of pharmacy, the famous term is Pharmacognosy. In general, the materials of this book are divided into three parts:
- bio medicine of carbohydrate group
- bio medicine of glycocyde group
- bio medicine of volatile oil group
Pharmacognosy is closely related to medical science, agriculture, physics, and chemistry. To study this field, one has to have understanding on biology including botany, zoology, physiology, anatomy, morphology, histology, classification, plant chemistry, ecology, and genetics.
The term pharmacognosy was first introduced by C.A. Seydler (1815), a medical researcher in Haale Germany in his writing entitled Analecta Pharmacognostica. Pharmacognosy originates from Greek, pharmakon meaning "medicine" and gnosis meaning "knowledge." So, pharmacognosy is the science of natural medicine. It is a way of knowing the characteristics of medicines that come from nature. Pharmacognosy covers the art and science of natural medication including plants, animals, microorganism, and minerals.
The existance of pharmacognosy has been started since men began curing diseases, maintained their health. In the beginning, people do not recognize the term pharmacognosy. Therefore, they did not correlate pharmacognosy with any fields related to health. As a matter of fact, pharmacognosy is a very specific subject in the fields of health and pharmacy. People have known the merit of opium, kina, insulin, thyroid, and polio vaccines. But, they did know if these are part of pharmacognosy study field.
