Before I begin, here are two things:
1) Everyone loves Quentin Tarantino
The ultimate movie geek fantasy, Tarantino worked in a video store for ten years before getting financing for his first feature film Reservoir Dogs. His next film, Pulp Fiction is one of the greatest films of the 90's, if not all time. The man is a genius; a perverted genius, but a genius none the less. Some people complain that he lacks originality, but quite frankly, that's only because they wish they could achieve his level of his success.
2) Everyone loves Brad Pitt
Along with Christian Bale, Pitt is the only Hollywood Megastar who really impresses me with the versatiliy of his performances. Whether he be playing a deranged anarchist in Fight Club, a pickey boxer in Snatch, or a borderline retarded gym instructor in Burn After Reading, he aways brings his A-game, even if the overall film is somewhat lacking (He was even good in Mr and Mrs Smith)
With all that out of the way, let's examine the trailer for (you guessed it) the latest Quentin Tarantino film starring Brad Pitt...Inglourious Basterds (yes it's meant to be spelled that way.)
Overall, I think this trailer looks really good. There are some pretty cool shots, and the speech deliverd by Lt Aldo Raine (Pitt) certainly sounds like something Tarantino might write. The story seems like a combination of Kill Bill and Saving Private Ryan. The music is awesome (which is something that we expect from all QT films), although it's not the sort of thing that would have been playing over the airwaves circa 1944. My favourite thing about the trailer however is declaration that "You haven't seen war until you've seen it throught the eyes of Quentin Tarantino", which makes it sound as though we can expect plenty of wild bloody mayhem throughout.
My critisms are that BJ Novak looks incredibly silly in this trailer, Brad Pitt's accent is annoying as hell, and that Hitler shot at the end is a little bit confusing. Aside from that, everything looks great.
Inglourious Basterds will be released in Australian cinemas some time after August 20th 2009
