Awesome Scene Sunday: "Sparring program"

I realised just this evening that it has been years since I watched The Matrix. Many students at my high school have had the fun sucked out of that film due to studying it R.E., but despite this it remains one of my all time favourite movies. The first time I saw it was an absolutely incredible experience (as I'm sure it was for many others).

Of course the special effects are revolutionary, but conceptually the movie blew my twelve year old mind (I watched it for the first time in 2002 on VHS). I had never seen anything like it (and arguably haven't since). The ideas the film puts forward absolutely captivated me; this was perhaps the first movie that made me "think" on any kind of philosophical level. As well as that, it instantly shot to the top of my list of my favourite action movies; since then it's only been knocked down a single spot.

The scene I've chosen for today gives a nice balance of both the action and the ideas; a combination of the techno-wisdom and Yuen Woo-ping choreographed kung fu. I know in the face of the sequels it's hard to look fondly on this film, but The Matrix is one of the most influential films to me as an individual/movie buff, as well as being one of the most influential films to cinema as a medium to be made in my lifetime. I said I haven't watched it in a couple of years - tomorrow I plan on rectifying that. I just hope it holds up.
