Yesterday, millions of people around Australia casted their vote in the 2010 Federal Election. For many of my friends and I, it was our first ever opportunity to do so. As of right now, the race seems too close to call (in fact we may have a hung parliament on our hands, whatever that means). But no matter what the results, the whole process has me feeling uncharacteristically patriotic. Therefore, this weeks scene comes from my all time favourite Australian movie, and possibly one of the funniest films ever made.
Directed by Rob Stitch, the movie is 1997's The Castle, and it tells the story of a suburban Melbourne family - The Kerrigans - fighting to save their house after it is threatened by the expansion of a nearby airport. Filled with lovable characters and endless quoteable lines, the humour is quintessentially Australian, and the film is also filled with what campaigning politicians might call "traditional Australian values"; things like the right to own your own home, and the idea of the little guy taking on big business.
The Kerrigans do come across as rather simple folk, and the way they talk and behave certainly doesn't represent all Australian's. Still, the love they clearly feel for their home and each other is very touching, and I can't help but feel that the country might actually be better off it we had someone like Darryl Kerrigan as Prime Minister instead of whoever we're eventually going to end up with.
All that being said, the scene I've selected focuses on a relatively minor character: hapless attorney Dennis Denuto, who in this scene provides one of the movies' all time classic lines.
I'd be very interested in finding out if any of my international readers have had a chance to see The Castle; if not I'd highly recommend checking it out. In the mean time, take a look at the scene below and let me know what you think.
Additional fun fact: this movie also features Eric Bana's first film performance.
