One of the problems with a blog is that it is impossible to demonstrate being speechless with rage. I guess I could just make a post filled with exclamation marks, but that would probably just confuse people. So I'm afraid your just going to have to take my word for it when I tell you that after seeing the music video for the Pussycat Dolls cover of "Jai Ho" (the Best Original Song winner from my beloved Slumdog Millionaire), I was so angry I literally lost for several minutes the ability to speak. I can't find an embeddable copy of the cover version, so you'll have to search it out yourself on youtube.
Go now!
Alright, so presumably you've put yourself through the same tortue as I have. I don't need to tell you what a horrific experience it was, because if you're reading this then YOU HAVE EYES. However, my anger about it is so totally consuming that in order to find some kind of catharsis, I have no choice but to write a bitter, sarcastic and very profane rant. And here we go!
This song (when it's not busy being a commercial for fucking mobile phones) simultaneously manages to be so similar the original that it's basically plagiarism, while at the same time being just different enough to remove all the originals appeal. The lyrics are painfully generic, which is surprising seeing as normally no one would ever associate the words "painfully generic" with the Pussycat Dolls (this is the other problem with a blog: it's very hard to denote sarcasm.) The dancing take the worst parts of traditional Bollywood and the normal crotch thrusting bump and grind style of the Pussycat Dolls, which means that on top completely manipulating Indian culture, it's also not that sexy.
I have lost all respect for Rahman, who proves himself to be just as much of a prostitute as most Western artists (like, say, The Pussycat Dolls for example.) And if he had to sign off on a cover, did it have to be from a band who select their cast members from a fucking reality TV show where contestants are judged not on their abilities but on the cost of their breast implants? Not only has he created a monster, he has also ruined his own song: I know I can never listen to it again. Fuck him, fuck this song and fuck the Pussycat Dolls. Because the impression I get from this song is that that's all they're good for. They sure as hell can't produce decent music!
