Trailer - Drag Me To Hell (and a long speech about the awesomeness of Evil Dead)

The timing for this trailer really couldn't be better, at least from my perspective. Over the weekend, a group of my friends and I got together for a night of movie watching frivolity, and among the titles selected were Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness (Evil Dead 3.) For those that don't know, the trilogy follows Ash Williams (played with magnificent camp by Bruce Campbell) as he fights off (with the help of his trusty chainsaw and twelve-gauge Remington 'boomstick') the never ending hordes of 'Deadites' that plague the Tennessee woods (and later Medieval England.) The original film was directed by Sam Raimi over the course of a year on a shoe-string budget, and upon it's release in 1981 it caused enormous controversy due to it's over-the-top comedic bloody violence (although when viewed today it's hard to see what all the fuss was about.) The films have since become cult classics; the awful special effects, one liners and copious amounts of blood (making Kill Bill look like a children's birthday party) make these films a cornerstone of modern black comedy and horror.

Anyway, to get to the topic at hand, Drag Me To Hell is Raimi's long awaited return to the genre that made his name. There are definitely moments in this trailer that are reminiscent of Evil Dead (I'm thinking specifically of the scene in the carpark.) Overall, it doesn't look fantastic (what is the apple guy doing there?), but I have full confidence in Raimi, and the story at least seems pretty cool. Here's hoping that this movie really will be 'The Return of True Horror' (because frankly those Saw movies are really starting to piss me off)

So...I guess I don't have anything else to say about this movie, other than everyone should check out the Evil Dead movies, and if you like them, keep an eye out for this film as well.

The Australian release date for Drag Me To Hell is yet to be announced. The Evil Dead Trilogy is available now on DVD.

Alright you Primitive Screwheads, listen up! You see this? This... is my boomstick!
