Weekly Film News: Funny People, Surrogates, Thor & Battleship

In order to lend Plus Trailers some much needed credibility, every Friday I am going to be writing a little about the week’s film news. I will only be reporting on things that interest me – fans of Twilight will have to go elsewhere. In fact, if you want comprehensive or unbiased news coverage you’re probably looking in the wrong place. But if you can stand my poor grammar, prejudicial "journalism" and nerdish rants about whatever it is that Hollywood is screwing up this week then by all means read on. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Three TV spots for Judd Apatow's new movie Funny People have been released, and they are really funny (how ironic!). The film stars Adam Sandler as a stand up comedian who finds out he's dying. It co-stars Apatow regulars Seth Rogen, Leslie Man and Jonah Hill, and will be released in the US on the 31st of July (I think the Australian release date is July 30th, but I can't confirm that). Despite liking these spots, I am not all that excited for the movie. There's something about Apatow's films that I find immensely forgettable; I really liked both Knocked Up and 40-Year Old Virgin while I was watching them, but I've never been tempted to revisit them. I'll definitely see Funny People, but I'm not counting down the days like I am with, say, Avatar or Inglorious Basterds. You can view all three Funny People TV spots here.

Speaking of Inglorious Basterds, three short clips from the film were released online this week. I've already written a post about them but because I'm QT obsessed, I thought I'd just reiterate my thoughts: AMAZING!!! All three videos can be found here.

Bruce Willis will be staring in a film called Surrogates, about a not-to-distant future in which people can live their lives through robotic versions of themselves without ever having to leave their homes. The concept is pretty interesting, and the trailer makes it look like a good if slightly generic sci-fi action film - I do love the moment about fifteen seconds from the end. Surrogates is directed by Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3) and will be released in the US on September 25th, and in Australia on October 8th. The trailer can be viewed here.

The green band trailer for Brüno has been released and...it's almost exactly the same. All the swear words have been cut out, but there is less than 10 seconds of new footage. Click here if you want to take a look, but if you've seen the red band then it's really not worth watching.

The above poster is for District 9, the South African sci-fi film I have mentioned a couple of times in previous posts (click here to see the amazing trailer). I really love this movies viral marketing campaign and cannot wait to see it (release dates: US 14th August, Australia 15th October)

Chris Hemsworth has been cast in the title role in the upcoming film Thor, based on the Marvel comics character (based on the...god). Hemsworth is an Australian actor (represent!) known for playing roles in local soaps Neighbours and Home and Away (ewwww....is that really the best we have to offer?) He also recently appeared in the opening scene of Star Trek as James Kirk's father. I don't really know what to think about this film...I know nothing about the character, but making a superhero movie about a god seems kinda...retarded.

Antichrist, the new film from Lars von Triers which I have repeatedly pimped on this blog has premiered at the Cannes film festival to fairly negative reviews. The general consensus is that it is horrifyingly, violently, pornographically messed up: Roger Ebert said called it "the most despairing film I’ve ever have seen". I'm pretty disappointed, because I thought the trailer looked fantastic. Oh well.

Peter Berg, director of Hancock and The Kingdom is apparently going to be directing a film based on Battleship...no, it's not a famous novel. It's the board game...as in "you sunk my battleship." And that's not all! This is just one of many boardgames set to be made into films; others include Ouija Board, Candyland and (most heinously) Monopoly (to be directed by Ridley Scott!) WTF?!

DVDs

Recent DVD releases in Australia include Seven Pounds ( heard it was crap), Vicky Christina Barcelona (might check it out) and Revolutionary Road (I'd rather watch American Beauty). The second season of Underbelly also hit the shelves; my absolute contempt for Australian television has kept me away from this series, but I might watch it eventually.

Finally (VCE students should get a laugh out of this), the ABC/BBC miniseries based on the Robert Drewe novel The Shark Net has been released, so anyone who hasn't read the book yet (I know a few people in my English class to whom that might apply) might want to take a look.
