Weekly Film News: Inglorious Basterds, The Princess and the Frog & Jake Gyllenhaal is extremely white

In order to lend Plus Trailers some much needed credibility, every Friday I am going to be writing a little about the week’s film news. I will only be reporting on things that interest me – fans of Twilight will have to go elsewhere. In fact, if you want comprehensive or unbiased news coverage you’re probably looking in the wrong place. But if you can stand my poor grammar, prejudicial "journalism" and nerdish rants about whatever it is that Hollywood is screwing up this week then by all means read on. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Ten new photos and two new character posters have been released for Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming WWII film Inglorious Basterds have been released. Also, Tarantino has revealed that should the movie be successful, he has plans for a prequel. I’m putting money on this never happening, because as much respect as I have for the man as a film-maker, he talks a lot of shit. You can view the photos here.

The trailer for Disney's The Princess and the Frog has been released, and can be viewed here. It is Disney's first 2D animated feature since 2004, and is also their first film to feature an African American princess. Way to break down barriers!

An epic 4 minute long trailer for Terminator Salvation has been released, giving us a much better idea of the films overall story. The trailer can be viewed here - I especially liked young Kyle Reeses line at 1:19.

Another terrific trailer has been released; Nine is the new film from Rob Marshall, the director of Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha. Based on the critically acclaimed broadway musical of the same name, the film follows a film director (played by the magnificent Daniel Day-Lewis) struggling with his latest project as well as the many women in his life (played by (among others) Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Sophia Loren...you get the idea). Check the trailer out here - this one is highly recommended.

Three character posters for Michael Mann's new depression era crime film Public Enemies have been released. The one above features Johnny Depp as famed bank robber John Dillinger - the other two (which can be found here) feature Marion Cotillard as Dillinger's love interest and Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent assigned to track Dillinger down.

Footage from the set of the upcoming film Prince of Persia has been released and to be honest it looks pretty awful. The most obvious thing I notice is how un-Persian Jake Gyllenhaal is. The movie is based on the successful video game series - the footage can be viewed here.

DVD's

The revolution is here! The only major DVD release dates this week in Australia have been Blu-ray releases. Specifically, the first 5 original Star Trek films (coinciding with the release of the new film), South Park Season 12 and Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler (which is also available on regular DVD.)
