Weekly Film News: Nolan's Inception, Tomorrow when the War Began, the career of George Simmons & Decepticon balls

In order to lend Plus Trailers some much needed credibility, every Friday I am going to be writing a little about the week’s film news. I will only be reporting on things that interest me – fans of Twilight will have to go elsewhere. In fact, if you want comprehensive or unbiased news coverage you’re probably looking in the wrong place. But if you can stand my poor grammar and nerdish rants about whatever it is that Hollywood is screwing up this week then by all means read on. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Inception, the new film from one of my favourite directors Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight) has begun shooting in Japan on what is reported to be a $200 million budget. Little detail about the film, which has been described as “a contemporary science fiction action movie set within the architecture of the mind” has been revealed; what we know is that it has a massive all star cast including Leonardo DiCaprio & Ken Watanabe (pictured with Nolan, above), Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cillian Murphy and Michael Caine, and it is due to be released on July 16th 2010.

With the recent news about Inception, more people have gotten concerned about Nolan’s lack of involvement in the proposed Batman sequel. All we know so far is that he has not signed on to direct so far, but Warner Brothers are being extremely patient with him. In any case, there is little chance of seeing Batman 3 until at least July 2012 – with or without Nolan

Australian screenwriter Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean, Collateral) is apparently has plans to write and direct an adaptation of Tomorrow When the War Began. Written by John Marsden, the Tomorrow series is a very popular collection of young adult novels here in Australia, about a group of teenagers who are forced to become guerrilla fighters after a foreign enemy invades the country. There are seven books in total; I know I have read at least the first four (I recall they got worse as the series progressed). Still, I really liked the first book, and think this could make a pretty good movie. Beattie is set to begin shooting in September and has further plans to make a trilogy of films (presumably based on the first three books).

Above is the lastest poster for Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. In related news, producer Harvey Weinstein is reportedly asking Tarantino to cut 40 minutes of footage from the film, bringing the running time to an even two hours.

Director Judd Apatow’s new film Funny People stars Adam Sandler as George Simmons, a popular comedic actor who finds out his has a terminal disease. As part of the movies marketing process, a bunch of posters and footage from some of Simmons’ “films” have been released, and they are pretty damn funny. Of course, some of these movies look like things Sandler might actually be a part of – a piece of irony that he is no doubt aware of. You can see all the other posters and the hilarious footage here.

What Weekly Film News post would be complete without something from Transformers 2? This week, it was reported that one of the Transformers has…wait for it…testicles. The giant robot in the image above is called Devastator; he is made up of several construction vehicles, and is apparently sporting a pair of nuts formed by two colossal wrecking balls. Michael Bay, you’ve outdone yourself.
