The Hurt Locker & Brothers Bloom get Australian release dates

Good news my fellow Australian cinephiles! Two of the most critically acclaimed smaller films of 2009 appear to have finally secured Australian releases, albeit several months after their US premieres.

First off we have The Hurt Locker, an Iraq War action/drama from director Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break, K19: The Widowmaker). The film stars Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie, and follows a bomb disposal squad stationed in Baghdad in 2004. The movie has been almost universally adored, and the one word I keep hearing when used to describe it is "intense". 2009 has been a fairly poor year for action films, so I'm really looking forward to seeing if The Hurt Locker can turn things around

The Hurt Locker will hit Australian theates on October 22nd

The other film to secure release is The Brothers Bloom, director Rian Johnson's follow up to his 2005 debut Brick. A quirky, light hearted con-man caper starring Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel Weisz, I have heard Brothers Bloom pimped repeatedly on the slashfilmcast, where host David Chen called it his favourite movie of 2009. I haven't seen Brick, but I certainly plan on checking it out, and I'm really interested to see whether either film lives up to the hype.

The Brothers Bloom will hit Australian theatres on November 12th

It's not all good news - we're still waiting on a bunch of foreign and independent films to get release dates, including Park Chan-Wook's Thirst, Lars von Trier's Antichrist and (one that I am especially looking forward to) Armando Iannucci's In The Loop. Oh well, I guess we'll have to be patient. In the mean time, check out the trailers for The Hurt Locker and The Brothers Bloom, below.
