Anyone in Australia who owns a television would be mad if they didn't tune in to ABC2 tonight at 9:30 for the Australian premiere of the first season of The Wire. A cop drama set in Baltimore, this is perhaps one of the greatest television programs ever conceived. I myself discovered the series earlier this year on DVD after hearing it's universal praise, and to be honest, I was a little puzzled about all the acclaim. At least I was at first. This show is certainly a slow burner, with a lot of different characters and plot threads to keep track of. But trust me, if you pay attention and stick with it, you're in for one of the richest and most rewarding experiences you are ever likely to get from your television screen. And if you can't stand watching a mere one episode a week (I know I wouldn't be able to), the first four seasons are available on DVD.
