review: chanel coco & igor stravinsky. ♥

been looking for quite many times to relax recently, since there are many things to deal with (must be honest, sometimes they got me overwhelmed ;) ), so, i've been watching lots of movies recently, one of them is chanel coco and igor stravinsky (directed by jan kounen, 2009), which had also been selected for the closing night at cannes film festival. this movie was adapted from chris greenhalgh's novel titled coco and igor.

all of these times we've been admiring those pretty 2.55 bags and classic LBDs made by mme chanel. as fashionistas we had also heard too much about how she was a strong figure and a very independent woman that had dared to criticize her 1930s rival elsa schiaparelli about "
scheherazade is easy, a little black dress is hard", also the one who dared calling herself "fashion".

this movie really had tapped into her impeccable charms as both a successful designer and a wealthy woman with class that all of us may even still want to look up to nowadays. the story revolved around
mme chanel (played by the stunningly classy anna mouglalis) and musician igor stravinsky (mads mikkelsen--for those who are not familiar with him, he played alongside sam worthington in clash of the titans as his senior, captain draco and the 2006 casino royale as the main antagonist le chiffre), and how their world paralleled each other.

the independent chanel wanted to redefine women's fashion (now we all know why she is a legend now and then) and how stravinsky wanted to redefine music by creating innovations here and there. his first show was in 1913 where he got criticized for combining music and ballet for being considered as "too modern and too foreign". chanel was impressed, though, but that night she didn't have a chance to speak with stravinsky, instead, their first meeting was in 1920, where chanel was also saddened by the death of her beloved arthur 'boy' capel.

their meeting was short, chanel had also left too much mystery to be solved, but the impressions between them lasted long, especially after the newly wealthy chanel agreed to sponsor stravinsky's music materially, and she had also agreed to rent her villa for stravinsky to gather inspirations and create brilliant music. shortly said, stravinsky and his family agreed to move to chanel's villa and that was the start of the movie's climax.

the attractions between chanel and stravinsky was mutual, and they had affairs, eventhough stravinsky's wife,
katia (yelena morozova) was still in the same place. one day she spotted them together, where stravinsky trained chanel how to play the piano and how they were really close and attached to each other, then it started her worrying about the secret intimacy between the two.

the story went on and the affair got worse as chanel asked stravinsky to choose between her and katia with a sentence:
"a man never worths two women.", and i couldn't write all of them here, since they will come out as spoilers ;)

summed up, this movie is absolutely interesting, especially for those who are passionate about art and how both creative giants lived their lives. beautiful cinematography and great acting, also stunning settings and background music that will keep you bewitched until the very end of the movie. only,
don't take the kids to watch this movie since this movie contains some R-rated romance scenes and trust me, they really are not for the kids and people under 18 ;)
