The following contains spoilers for Donnie Darko
Of course.
Of course!
It's so simple!
You take Chris Fisher, the up and coming director behind (among other things) two episode of Moonlight (you know, that vampire show that was in no way a cheap rip off of Angel) and pair him with Nathan Atkins, an aspiring screenwriter known for his editing work on episodes of 24. You then put together a fresh young cast that includes Daviegh Chase (aka the evil girl from The Ring), Briana Evigan (best known for her portrayal of Andie in the Teen Choice Award Winning film Step Up 2: The Streets (a role for which she also won Best Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards)) and Ed Westwick (a cast member of the CW's Gossip Girl). Finally, you take the resulting powerhouse of talent and creativity and give it the keys to one of the most popular cult films of all time!
Why didn't anyone think of it before?
This trailer is atrocious, pure and simple. The acting looks like...well, like something you would expect from the stars of Gossip Girl and Step Up 2. The special effects look even worse than they were in the first film, despite this one having more than twice the budget. Frankly, I find the mere concept of a sequel to Donnie Darko insulting, not to mention illogical. You don't make a sequel when you kill off the main character at the end of the first movie, especially when that sequel banks of the acting talents of Daveigh Chase! Fans of Richard Kelly's orignal movie have been boycotting this film over the internet, and I support them completely. What the hell was Kelly thinking when he signed off on this?
Oh wait, he didn't. That's strange. It's almost as though he didn't want to be involved in defecating on his original vision.
Wierd, huh?
The good new is that S. Darko is being released direct to DVD in America (on April 28th if you want to know), so it will probably never make it here to Australia.
Here's hoping.
